Mixed poker games have become very popular in recent years, especially after the introduction of $50,000 World Championship H.O.R.S.E. event in the 2006 WSOP. The 8-Game Mix includes the following eight poker games:

T - Limit 2 to 7 Triple Draw
H - Limit Texas Hold'em
O - Limit Omaha Hi-Lo (8 or Better)
R - Razz
S - Limit Seven Card Stud
E - Limit Stud Eight or Better (Hi/Lo)
H - No-Limit Hold’em
A - Pot-Limit Omaha

How to Play 8-Game Mix

The maximum amount of players in an 8 Game Mix is six. The poker game is changed after every six hands (or after each round in a poker tournament). The first six hands are played in 2-7 Triple Draw, the next six in Limit Hold'em and so on. When the last Pot Limit Omaha hand is finished the game starts with 2-7 Triple Draw again. If the game takes place at the online poker room it is easy to see which poker variation is being played as it is displayed on the top of the poker table. The number of hands played is also shown.

The 8 Game Mix is different from the the other mixed poker games such as H.O.R.S.E. because it includes No-Limit Hold'em and Pot-Limit Omaha, whereas most of the other mixed poker games are played in fixed limits only. As the game is switched to No-Limit or Pot Limit the blinds and antes are reduced accordingly in order to maintain the same betting level.

Taking Notes

Most of the 8-Game Mix players usually do not even know all of the poker variations very well. Therefore taking notes on each player becomes very important. Even if you do not like it, you would still have to note the games in which the particular player feels themselves more comfortable. For example:

“Player cmybets constantly folds in seven card stud until they're in bring-in. Same with Razz. Good at Omaha”.

This little note which which would only take a few seconds of your time would tel you that if this player makes a UTG raise in a stud round, they might have a strong hand. You would also know that they're more used to the other games and start to sense when it is better to keep away from this player and when to take advantage of their weaknesses.

The Change of Limits

It is also important to note the change of limits when the games switch between No-Limit, Pot-Limit and Limit in order to keep the bet level and the betting rounds. If any of the limits make you uncomfortable it is better to play only very strong starting hands. Do not try just to sit through some of the rounds folding all the hands as this is not only unethical, but it's also your first-class ticket out of the game.

By playing 8-Game Mix one is sure to witness and to take part in a very active and diverse game of poker. Most of the players are usually new at such games as Omaha therefore they might play too many hands.
